ANTIQUE CHINESE ALTAR TABLE carved TIXI LACQUER

Description

Please note there is a double flare on the first picture.  The red and black is consistent and vibrant.
This is a rare Chinese altar carved lacquer (on wood)
called "Tixi."  Carved with a sword pommel scroll motif.  Red and black carved.  This technique began in
the Song dynasty and lasted all the way to the sixteenth century.  This Chinese altar is marked with an archaic script seal. I believe this is the Yongle period of the Ming dynasty seals.  Absolutely made in Chinese and an antique.
Two drawers.  Black lacquer on back and on bottom and inside the drawers.  All hand carved
on top, on sides, in front and on legs.  Legs are Ming style.  The piece is in remarkable condition.
Brass pulls.
I had a hard time photographing this.  There are no streaks or
difference in shading, that is the sunlight
and shadows in the room.  To see the layers look at all the pictures of the close up.
It is a lovely shade of stained Chinese red with the black layers.  Not garish.

There is a small hairline crack in enamel between the drawers and a small paint mark of touch of red paint.

While lacquer has been used in China for at least 3,000 years,[1] the technique of carving into very thick coatings of it appears to have been developed in the 12th century CE. It is extremely time-consuming to produce, and has always been a luxury product, essentially restricted to China,[2] though imitated in Japanese lacquer in somewhat different styles. The producing process is called Diāoqī (雕漆, carving lacquer).
Though most surviving examples are from the Ming and Qing dynasties, the main types of subject matter for the carvings were all begun under the Song dynasty, and the development of both these and the technique of carving were essentially over by the early Ming.
