Larimer Cushman and his wife retired to Mockhorn Island and built out buildings including barns, and cooling houses plus a concrete sea wall and flood gates to protect the island. Jones died in 1957 and then the state of Virginia assumed ownership. Jones was a government contractor who often entertained high-ranking military officers and politicians at his island.
