    Up for auction is an antique (100+ year old) EMBOSSED Victorian Trade Card from the Woolson Spice Company. This trade card was published (and lithographed) by Bufford. Victorian trade cards are an early form of collectible advertising. Popularized after the Civil War by businesses, they offer a colorful and diverse look at popular culture and society in the late 1800s. Trade cards (like the one in this auction) have a picture on one side and an ad on the other side. This Trade Card was in a package of Lion Coffee.
    The front of the trade card shows a man paddling a rowboat with a woman and a dog inside of the boat. The man is standing up using one long oar (like a gondolier). The woman is all dressed up and is holding an umbrella. The dog is looking over the edge of boat at the water.
    “The Woolson Spice Co’s., Midsummer Greeting”
    is printed in the front top right corner area.
    The back of the trade card is an advertisement for Lion Coffee. The following is printed on the back of the card:
    “To secure a picture card like this you have only to buy a package of LION COFFEE! It is composed of a successful combination of MOCHA JAVA and RIO. It is roasted with the greatest care, but is not ground. Lion is the King of Coffees! Manufactured by the Woolson Spice Co. Toledo, Ohio. Sold only in one pound packages. A beautiful picture card in every package.
    CONDITION
    This trade card has small corner bumps with some edge wear. There is a spot (slightly less than ¼” in diameter) of surface wear on the back on the card which is not noticeable from the front of the card. There are some creases ~ the largest measures approximately 1-1/8 long ~ all of the creases have laid flat for years. The back of the card has lightly browned due to aging and there are stains.
